How do i Stop carrying the Ball in basketball?
I dont know why but sometimes in games or practice i Start carrying the ball. It's Not that i dont have Handles i practice dribblig everyday but its a bad habbit and i want it to stop so i wont get anmore turnovers.
Practice, practice, practice...
...until the basketball becomes a Part of you.
The worst thing to do in sports is to "think". If you have to "think" in a game situation, then All is lost. Do all of Your "thinking" in practice.
Practice dribbling a Lot just with the tips of your Finger tips touching Only the Top of the ball.
Unfortunately, decades ago all of the pros started carrying the ball which has filtered Down to college, then to High School and below without the referees calling an infraction for palming the ball.
All Little kids start Out usually watching NBA basketball where they usually Carry the ball while dribbling.
Another reason for not carrying the ball and practicing finger Tip Control of your dribble (Very low so the ball cannot be stolen) is that when you carry the ball while dribbling, there is no Way to Change directions on a "dime" as the defender knows that you are going to carry the ball and Can either anticipate the direction you will be going or anticipate where the ball will be at Any Point in your dribble so the defender can steal the ball much easier.
Carrying the ball has consequences far beyond just being called for "palming" the ball by the referee as the defender can anticipate your moves.
If you dribble the ball with your fingertips hitting only the top of the ball then you can move either Left or Right while dribbling in a fraction of a Second to Make your move to the Basket, to make your move to get Free of the defender to get Off a Shot, etc...
And, remember through constant practice, you will Never have to think as the ball will become part of your Body and that extends to shooting.
