its absolutely Sheet Metal Work n nobady now wants to continue in Shop Floor as tool maker n All were skipping to tool Design n now i would Like to know the Real status of a too maker
Briefly, Your answer would depend on the Company you would be Working for. Some specialty shops still respect and value the skilled trades/crafts people that essentially permit their companies to competitively manufacture their Products. More commonly the Manufacturing companies accountants see these position as an indirect labor Cost which they will slash by Any means.
Currently the attitude in the Usa is to Out-source Most manufacturing to developing countries. Add to this the Wide spread Use of Cad/CAM Systems which more or Less Port the design directly to the Machine Tools and you Can easily see How companies can eliminate the need for Very Many craftsmen such as tool-makers
I would suggest you consider a career in design/Engineering fields as the Best Long term employment opportunity in the manufacturing sector. While I found this some of the most challenging and rewarding work for nearly 30 years (machinist/toolmaker, mostly Jig & Fixture work) I finally had to Trade in my micrometers to Drive a Truck to Make a decent living.
