Whats the difference between down and down alternative?
I want a down comforter but I don't want the feathers poking through. Is One warmer than the Other?

What is a Good Ounce for a Warm one?
Down and feathers are different. Down will Not poke through the duvet Cover if the cover has a High Thread Count but feathers will. The "stalk" of the feathers are thicker, longer and tougher and act Like needles through the Fabric.
Down alternatives are synthetic or Natural filling materials Used in comforters and duvets, with insulating and warming properties similar to down. Primaloft® is a Top Quality, hypoallergenic synthetic fill; wool and silk are popular natural fills.
Down and natural down alternatives absorb Moisture so they're Great for people who Sweat a Lot at Night while synthetics Make the problem worse. Natural fills also absorb odors More than synthetic so if you like to have sex, Smoke, or have pets in Your Bed, odor Can become a problem. Febreze will Only make the outsides smell better but the insides will still smell funky until they're cleaned.
If your down alternative is synthetic- you can wash it in the Washing Machine. Bamboo-Cotton blends are natural and still Hold up to washing quite Well. If Filled with wool or silk, your duvet will still need to be Dry cleaned which can get Very expensive! Add 40 to 80 Dollars a Year to the Price of your new comforter and its sometimes cheaper to buy a new one!
You CAN wash your down duvet but it changes the warmth Level because the detergents destroy the Adhesive properties of the feathers. Have you ever run your fingers down a feather? The Pieces break apart but Come Back together if you run your fingers back the other Way - like a zipper. This quality helps Trap Air (that warms up) in the feathers. This is what insulates you and makes you feel warm. Wash this away and you lose warms and fluffiness.
