What are the different Types of Morse keys and How do they Work?

I have noted that there are Many different types of keys available for Morse Code, but I am unfamiliar with how All of them work.

Specifically, are there keys that automatically produce dits and dahs without requiring the Operator to do so manually (I'm Not sure if I would want to Use a Straight Key given that I would have to produce dahs manually)?

Also, are there keys that produce spaces automatically (or is that simply asking for too much) :-D ?

The Most common One, as you appear to know, is called a straight key.

A variation of this was called a Side-swiper. It was Operated with a sideways movement. The Arm had a Central position and contacts on either side. Nothing Automatic - it simply Closed the Circuit when moved to either of the Two positions.
A write-up on using these is here http://www.mtechnologies.Com/cootie.htm

Soon after that came the Semi-automatic keys, the most famous of which is the Vibroplex.

They all work in the same Basic Way.

Their Operation is by a side to side movements.

If the Lever is moved to the Left it simply closes a contact, and is Used to send dahs.

If the lever is moved to the Right, an Extension From the arm, connected to it by a Section of Flat Spring, is Set into lateral vibration. The Speed of this is determined by the position Along the extension of a Weight or weights, which effectively Change the Length of a horizontally moving pendelum.

Attached to the Vibrating section is a contact which makes and breaks with a Fixed one, thus producing the dits.

Look at the pictures and drawing on this Site, particularly on section 3.

And look at the vibroplex site at http://www.vibroplex.com/

A More Modern development has been Various Electronic keyers.

These will produce automatic dahs with a movement of a lever (Paddle) to the left, and automatic dits with a right movement.

A further development is that of so-called "iambic", or "sqeeze", keyers.
These had two paddles Close together.
Operating the right paddle (to the left) produces automatic dahs.

Moving the left paddle to the right produces automatic dits.

If one squeezes both paddles towards Each Other,a Series of alternating dits and dahs is produced, all correctly spaced.

If the right paddle is Held to produce dahs and the left paddle is briefly operated while doing so, a Single dit is inserted in the String of dahs.

Conversely, if the left paddle is held to produce a series of dits, a single dah may be inserted in the string by briefly operating the right paddle at the same Time.

Search for "iambic keyers" and you will have plenty to read. It coughs up YouTube Clips too.
