How do I Repair Overhead Lights that has relays switches?
The House was built in 1954 and thats is the Lighting System that was Used. The lights doesn't Come on. Some are Silent when you Hit the Switch, and some you Can hear a hum in the Ceiling but the lights still doesn't come on. The Wiring at the switches is Very Small, Not Regular wiring Like you will find in up to Code houses. And the whole house is wired without a Ground.
there are low Volt relays that the switch Controls.Usually at a Central location near the Transformer
The Relay controls the low volt Coil of the Contactor.Usually at the Light box
When the contactor closes ,120 volt Line to Load and you have light.
If you hear a hum then probably bad contactor.replace
and or may be able to Clean.
The low volt relay can be checked with a ohm Meter as to Working Open or Closed when switched.If not working it is a closed Unit that you will need to replace.
