How do you find the optical purity of a Compound when given the known and experimental specific Rotation?

For example, an S enantiomer has a specific rotation of +24. A Commercial sample was found to have a rotation of +16. What is the optical purity of the mixture and the percentages of S and R enantiomers in the mixture?

A racemic mixture of the compound would have a specific rotation of 0, and would be a 50-50 mixture of the Two Forms. The commercial sample has a rotation 2/3 of the Pure S Form. Since the Total Range of rotations of different mixtures would be 48 degrees (-24 to +24), it is 1/6 R form (8/48) and 5/6 S form.

Just convert those fractions to percentages, and you've got it.
