I buy a product Out-of-State and charge customers to instal it. What tax responsibilities do I have?
I have Not purchased the product yet, but I'm buying as a Wholesale Dealer, so I assume I Pay the state Sales tax of the product maker. Then do I also pay a sales tax in my state? Do I charge a sales tax to the customer I'm installing the product with? I'm in Chicago Illinois.
When you buy From another state, you usually have to pay a sales tax to that state, but if you buy wholesale, Most sales taxes don't apply because you're not the End user. (In my state, there is a "Business and occupation" tax with a List of about 50 different taxes for Various Industries, including sales tax. If Your state has the same thing, just Check the list to see if your industry is Included. You might have a .0005 Per dollar levy somewhere.)
When you Install the product, you're providing a Service, not selling a product, and there is usually no tax on the service portion of the bill.
However, you now have to charge Your Own state's sales tax because you've just sold a product to an end user. The retail portion of your Sale is taxable. You, the seller, are responsible to pay the tax, but most businesses pass that tax on to the customer. (You are not required to do so.)
Contact the Illinois department that charges state sales tax to find out the rates applicable to your neighborhood in Chicago.

"Use" taxes Only apply when you buy wholesale and then use what you buy personally or for your business. For example if you bought One of your things wholesale and then Installed it in your own Office. You are "using" your own wholesale product and pay a "use" tax--because you become the end user.
