How do I play flute softer but still reach the higher notes?
I started flute about 5 months ago, recently I was playing and my friend commented on how loud I was playing and tonguing. My teacher hasn't commented about those issues, but I would Like to know how to play and Tongue softer but still reach the higher notes. Playing the higher notes isn't a problem for me usually if i practise them a Bit, but I'm having trouble trying to play softer and reach the higher notes at the same Time. Does anyone have Any suggestions? I would really appreciate them. Thanks =)
As for the tounging Make sure you are using "Da" instead of "Ta". It Used to be widely beleived that a Rough T was needed to produce a definitive tounging Sound. With flute(and they are finding More instruments), the lighter the tounge the better. Not sure what you Use??? Using an A in the staff play Quarter notes. (Sticking with One note will allow you to focus on Other things.) Now, Pay attention to where you are hitting Your tounge. Are you hitting it Right on the Back of your Teeth, or further back on the Roof of your mouth? You should be hitting right about where the Front Ridge is on your Hard pallette. To practice your tounging do about eight counts of quarter notes, then eight counts (16) eigth notes, then eight counts (32) sixteenth notes.
When you play just remember that when you play lower your Air goes lower, higher the air goes higher. By this I mean when you play your higher notes you want to play more across the tone Hole the into the tone hole. What helps with this is if you keep your Jaw relaxed, you Can move it back to help Direct the air Down, and forward to help direct it across.
When you say teacher I am going to Take a guess you mean your teacher at your School. If you are serious about learning, and think this is something you are going to Stick with, get a private teacher. They can help you to Learn these things you aren't going to really learn in a group or school Setting. You can Plan on 10-50 dollars for private lessons, depending on your location.
If there really are sessions with James Galway on You Tube, look them up. Watch them and learn From them. He is one of the Best flutist Out there today. Another one you can see if there is anything for is Trevor Wye. I used to use his practice Books, and he has a Lot of Good ideas.
