Is it absolutely necessary to Use Assembly lube when rebuilding an Engine?
I'm rebuilding the engine on my '87 883xl evolution sportster, ( converting it to a 1200) and I've got it All the Way Down to the crank Case. I'm pretty anxious to put it Back together, Can I use 20W50 Oil in lieu of assembly lube? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
While assembly lube offers Extra Protection for fresh moving surfaces it is Not absolutely necessary. Think about the millions of Engines that have been succesfully built before it's invention.
You can assembe the Motor useing engine oil without any problems. Before firing the motor for the first Time, spin it without the Plugs in until you get oil Pressure. Then Install the plugs, Start the motor and follow Standard break in procedures.
Then Ride it Like ya stole it, Save up Your money and buy a Shovelhead.
