How to repair Screws coming Out of Drywall?
My staircase Rail is coming loose. The screws From the rail are coming out of the holes from the drywall. How do you repair the drywall so the screws will Hold?
If Your staircase rail is attached by screws that *Only* go into drywall, and Not into studs or blocking, then it's just been Installed badly. You won't Fix this by repairing drywall (or at least the fix won't last.) There Can be Way too much stress on a handrail for drywall to hold it alone, even if they at least Used Toggle Bolts to Install it.
Now, to be fair, sometimes *some* of the screws will be into Wood and others just into drywall. Or perhaps you are only seeing the drywall and haven't looked to see if a Stud is underneath.
If there is a stud or wood blocking that you can Drive a Screw into to secure the Railing, Use it. If not, you could use toggle bolts -- these are the bolts with 'wings' that spread out on the Other (invisible) Side of the drywall. But yes, this will be a compromise and not as Good as screwing directly into wood support.
P.S. I noticed some of the other answers suggesting Plastic Anchors -- if you Picture an elderly but not Lightweight relative, say, coming Down the stairs, tripping and trying to Save themselves from a broken hip by grabbing onto the railing and essentially yanking on it with All their Weight in a Horizontal tug ... I wouldn't want to trust that relative's limbs to a plastic Anchor, or even really to toggle bolts, but certainly not to a plastic anchor.
