Whats the difference between Threaded & Internally Threaded for a Labret Stud ?
I am looking for a cartilage (helix) piercing studs & i have brought an internally threaded labret but I dont get the difference between threaded & Internally threaded ?
On internally threaded jewellery, the threaded Screw Bit is on the Ball or Attachment, and the Hole that the threaded bit goes into is on the Bar or the Post.
On externally threaded jewellery (the More common Style) the Thread is on the bar or post, and the hole is in the ball or attachment.
Externally threaded jewellery is cheaper to manufacture and therefore more readily available.
The benefits to internally threaded jewellery is that the Rough threaded bit doesn't need to pass through Your piercing, which Can be of some benefit for new piercings - once your piercing is healed it doesn't really matter. It's also possible to Make the balls smaller if the jewellery is internally threaded as there's no need to have space for the hole Inside the ball, which is why you'll find a Lot of 1.2mm (16g) labret studs are internally threaded, so the jewels and balls can be delicate.
The disadvantage is though that you can rarely get spare balls for internally threaded jewellery - if you lose the Top, you need to buy a whole new bar. Any spares would need to Come From the same manufacturer to Fit existing jewellery as the thread Length and spacing can vary from Company to company, unlike with externally threaded jewellery which tends to be more uniform. Externally threaded balls tend to be Compatible even across different manufacturers.
